A Christening is the first step of an amazing journey with God, parents, godparents, friends, family and the church. As part of the Church of England, the Abbey welcomes babies, children, families of any kind - and people of any age can be christened, too.
Your child is precious to you and precious to God. You want the very best for them and having them christened is just the beginning of helping them make the right choices in life, for themselves and others.
During a christening your child will be baptized with water in the Abbey's historic font: the bowl is believed to go back to Roman times! Every child and every adult who are baptized here thereby join a community that includes the local church yet also crosses the borders of time and space. It is the community of all those who recognize something of the uniqueness of Jesus, and seek to follow his teaching about life and God.
At Hexham Abbey, baptisms (or christenings, it means the same) are conducted either as part of the more formal Parish Eucharist at 10am or during a less formal service of Morning Worship later in the morning. We will discuss with you at which service you would like the baptism to take place, and we're also happy to consider special requests for hymns/songs and readings.
Preparing for your child's christening is exciting and there's lots to think about. You might find the Church of England's Christening website helpful which is specially for parents, godparents and guests.
Please remember you can be christened at any age! If you'd like to explore adult baptism further, please contact us for a chat.
When you contact us about a christening, we will invite you to a Preparation Morning on a Saturday where you can meet one of the clergy, plan the service with them and ask any questions, as well as arrange a date.
We do not charge for christenings, but a collection is made during the service. Hexham Abbey is here for everyone and relies on donations, so your generosity is much appreciated.
If you feel it is not the right time to have your child christened, we also offer a Thanksgiving Service which is a great opportunity for family and friends to come together, give thanks for the baby and ask for God's blessing.
Planning a Christening Party? We have a suite of lovely function rooms that are perfect for your Christening Party. We would be delighted to help with your arrangements, if you'd like to celebrate here after the baptism.
